I hope this is the correct topic to post this, but anyways....

My brother has to do an informative speech for one of his classes and he has decided to do it on Iceland! :viking1: He is going to break it up into three topics: history, landscape, and culture. I'm helping him with the first two, but it would be great if I could get some insight on Icelandic culture right from the source. Post up some cultural info if you can help. Thanks!

Also, on an unrelated note. A friend of mine was talking about some kind of Icelandic Omega 3 supplament pill. Anyone know anything about it?

I think here's the product, but I don't know if it's Icelandic brand, my guess is Norwegian. It is also available in pure oil, capsules is made of dead cows if I'm not badly mistaken :O

Omega 3 is also available in turnip rape oil, salmon (which has the biggest amount of it) and it is also available in some eggs. Very good substance this Omega 3, lubricates the joints, decreases the feeling of pain (works on the nerve level) and is good for the heart. Almost a miracle substance, if I may say :D

But this is off-topic... As for the rest of your questions, Icelandic members will help you ;)

Culture... he should definitely steer for traditional, the great literary heritage etc. Modern culture would have to mention that one of the biggest parades is Gay Pride day. Alcohol is very expensive yet people routinely drink until the puke... publically. Björk's new record features a nigger making fart sounds with his mouth.

Maybe he should focus on a few great Icelandic writers and artists of the last century... Gunnar Gunnarsson, the novelist, sold tons of books in Germany before WW2 and compares to Knut Hamsun. Einar Jónsson was an incredible sculptor... plug these two into google and you'll get something good.

I've moved this thread to the Lounge. There isn't anything wrong with it, but it has nothing to do with Activism.

Ok, thanks Eldritch. I almost put it in the Lounge to begin with. Guess I should have gone with my first instinct!

Thanks for the input White Iceland. I will definately check that out. It's too bad about the modern culture..... :frown:

Thanks again for the help, White Iceland. My brother did quite well on the speech and the class found it to be really interesting. He even brought one of my big 3'x5' flags as a visual aid!

Maybe this is too personal to mention here, but I can highly recommend the Icelandic Omega-3 vitamins from cod. I took them through the entire first trimester of my pregnancy until my physician found out I was taking them and firmly told me to stop. Now there is new evidence out recommending that these be taken as prenatal suppliments.

My son has been repeatedly tested in school (he is now 10) and has always placed at least two and a half grade levels above where he is. I attribute some of this to those pills. Furthermore, I only breast fed him until he was about 4 weeks old because his father had taken him to stay with his sister while I was taking my exams and wouldn't bring him back to me until two weeks later; by then I couldn't get the baby to nurse again and my milk had almost dried up by completely. (BIG JERK!) Anyway, somehow my son has ended up being pretty far ahead of the other children in his class, and I just can't help but feel these Icelandic Omega-3 pills probably had something to do with that. :white_gb:

Just thought I would pass that along......

Most of Icelandic children take Cod Oil (Lýsi as we call it) through-out their childhood, I know I took it twice everyday until I was 12. It's said that Lýsi is what made us have the second longest Life expectancy (after Japan) up till 1995 when we started to slowly go down that list due to the mass introduction of American junk food restaurants during the last 10 years.

You can buy these easily as they are situated in the States (although not produced in Iceland, but are said to be good)

or you can try to search for this brand (http://www.lysi.is/lysi/is/english/) as these are the original Icelandic makers of Lýsi and by far the largest producer.

What needs to be remembered, is that fish oil (usually made of cod) and fish liver oil (also made of cod), the thing that tastes disgusting, are 2 different things. The latter one which I think is more popular, is rich of vitamin D and which is necessary for us who live in the north during the winter time, because then it's impossible to get vitamin D is impossible to get from the sun, and vitamin D is necessary for the absorbtion of calcium. During the summertime all needed vitamin D should be gotten from the sun, by staying in the sun for less than half an hour on daily basis. In this case, I suppose, the lighter the skin is, the easier vitamin D absorbs...

Fish oil instead is the one that is rich in Omega 3. I don't use it right now, but I have tasted it, the taste is very mild and tastes like fat. But I use Omega 3 eggs and turnip rape oil in cooking. Olive oil is nothing compared to it... :P

Lýsi (cod liver oil) also does contain Omega-3 but it is also possible to get certain types that have a higher Omega-3 content. My grandmother poured Lýsi down my throat since I was an infant and I think it did me nothing but good.

During my childhood I had to eat so much fish that I got sick of it! Only recently I have started to eat it with pleasure, and I prefer greasy fish like vendace, salmon and whitefish (greasy fish contains more vitamin D and omega-3). Pike... still can't eat it yuk! I still refuse to eat pike soup, I hate it so much.

Of less fatty fish bass and pike-perch are eatable. I try to avoid fish from the Baltic Sea because it's quite polluted, but lake fish and salmon imported from Norway should be ok.
