View Full Version : What Is Your Hair Color?

Can anyone post up some pictures of different hair colours they consider to be light blonde dark blonde light brown ect? Im a bit confused as people with 'dark blonde' sometimes seem to actually have darker hair than someone with 'light brown' So is blondism to do with colour tone, not just depth? Also does anyone have any pics of Hallstats and East Baltics with natural hair so I can see the difference?

Ok when I say dark blonde I am often referring to just lighter than light brown. Dark blonde still has that golden cast to it that light brown lacks. I have seen people with hair that is basically light brown at the roots, but lighter and more golden towards the tips. I still refer to them as dark blonde. I don't consider any 'dark blondes' to be darker than 'light brunettes'. It's hard to give famous examples, because celebrities change their hair color so frequently. I guess, though, that I would say Michelle Pfeiffer and Jennifer Aniston, for example, are dark blondes, as opposed to, say, Laetitia Casta, who has light brown hair. Claudia Schiffer is a medium blonde, I would say; a lot of Scandinavian starlets are light blonde (Victoria Silvstedt, Frida Utter, etc.). The standards also vary for the sexes, since men tend to be darker. I would say that I am a medium blonde by female standards, but a light blonde by male standards, for example.

That is true, a woman who has the same hair colour as a man who is 'dark blonde' is often not described as a blonde. I think this is because women dye their hair more than men do - women who are naturally dark blonde often go light blonde

It would be nice if someone created a standardized hair pigmentation scale similar to what we are doing here, and then published statistics for each Nordish subtype, and for each nation in Europe (as well as America and Canada), to give us an idea of who is the blondest :) I have no idea how we would get around women (and men for that matter) who dye their hair, though.... why can't people just stick with the pigmentation Nature intended  ?

A lot of people don't like their hair color. Mostly for the reasons that they think it's too dark, and that blondes are much more attractive.

Yeah, the women lightening their hair thing has gone on for millenia, even in ancient Egypt. I guess I am just frustrated that any old Mediterranean thinks that a trip to the salon will make them Nordic!!!x_nono

Thanks NP88. I'm medium blonde! Yeah i hate it when dark people dye their hair blonde. This asian I know dyed her hair blonde and got blue contact lenses - sick! I have tried dying my hair both darker and lighter and both looked gross, so im back to my natural colour now - took all year to grow back:)

My hair is dark brown, however I have been told that two of my great-grandparents had reddish hair: My great-grandfather had bright red hair and my great-grandmother had strawberry-blonde hair. For now the redhead gene is recessive in me, but that could change when the next generation of my offspring comes. :gift

Very interesting!

I've always thought I'm medium brown with perceptible goldsh (and reddish) hue, but according to the chart it must be Light Golden Brown or even Strawberry Blond when under the sun.

Btw, what's the true colour? Under the sun or yellow/white electrical light? Or natural light without the sun?

I wonder, if the original image is better, as I can hardly discern darker colours... they all look the same.

Most of my hair would be considered light brown on this chart, but with light golden brown colouration down towards the roots.
I was born with very blonde hair, that gradually darkened with age. Even when I was 21 years old (I'm 25 now), after a haircut people would think I had dyed my hair blonde because of the difference in colour towards the roots.

Your hair looks blackish to me. but from what you describe hair/beard = Reddish, could well be the Phallian strain i talked about when you first wanted a classification way back, the Phallian element could certainly describe your eye gazing as some of us pointed out! Note: I do see something else than phallian in your eyes. perhaps mixes with Alpine and Dinaric!

as you know I live among blond people here. the decreased blondism I witness through my merely young existence have been depressing on me. the physical metamorphose toward darkish future is overwhelming but nevertheless there are still many blond people around where I am, it brings me to my next point in making this post--> alot of these blonds are not to bright people they have no pride and their pride is twisted and self opposed. when you declare how the true beauty characteristics of us are decreasingly shrinking all they do is say but there are so many whites HellStar, so we really doubt that. they simply refuse to believe it, cause most people from TV is white, and it leaves people with the impression that most of the earths population is consisting of white skinned people and several of them with blond hair and blue eyes, its the idiotic dream world they live in. there is around 0,03-0,04% of the population who has blond hair and blue eyes. and how many of these people are not Ebs? or blond brachycephals or something like that?

People are so fucking stupid they know nothing about evolution or origin. they think the world is anthropocentric and that we have no responsibility for what we see around us!

I think a chart with 40 shades would be quite beautiful to look at but way too complicated to use for anthropological categorizations.

On this chart:

http://www.forums.skadi.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=982

my natural haircolor is somewhere in the dark blonde - light brown range. I used to have a little bit of red. When I was about 4 years old my hair was orangish auburn- I have a picture of it and a sample of hair from my first haircut if you need proof. :P

I really have had every hair color on that chart (except the medium brown-black and white blonde-medium blonde series) through natural pigmentation changes. I have dyed my hair different colors since I was 13, too. My advice is don't use harsh permanent hairdyes because it ruins your hair. It's better to have healthy hair in a color you don't like. Use henna or something semipermanent if anything.

As a child I would say I had light/medium blond. As I grew older it became darker. I would consider my head hair mostly dark blond. My chin still is the lighter shade and my arms are light blond. I think if I were to get more sunlight I would lighten up. Not sure how true that is without trying. I wish I could hurry up and read Bakers Race so I can contribute more to these threads.

And, the rufosity of Normans was not confined to the nobility either. Don't get me wrong, though, all hair colors were probably present among the Normans of old with the possible exception of black; which if present, had to be the smallest % of the total...no one knows definitively the answers to such questions, of course. :( My SALUTE & HAIL! goes out to you, Normanblood. :D BTW, you're NO outcast to me, that's for sure! ;) Don't cry...I HATE to see Norman girls cry! ;(

Hey Suomut. I actually did not know William the Conqueror had auburn hair. The descriptions I've read have just described him as having steely blue eyes and being very tall (approximatly the size of his ancestor Hrolf). From what I read it seems it was very rare for a Norman to have a hair colour other than in the blonde or reddish spectrum, which would make sense.

Guess I was a little surprised to the lack of reddish (and even blonde) haired individuals on the forum.

Hey Suomut. I actually did not know William the Conqueror had auburn hair. The descriptions I've read have just described him as having steely blue eyes and being very tall (approximatly the size of his ancestor Hrolf).Greetings, NormanBlood. Just out of curiosity, whence did you get these descriptions? :) The source I have is Alan Lloyd's The Making of a King: 1066 via Brent A. Riley's article "William: From Bastard to Conqueror" in the magazine Military History (April 2002, pp. 50-57). Lloyd states: "Thy physical characteristics most commonly attributed to William have included a large frame, gray eyes under russet hair, thin lips, and a deep jaw. No contemporary portrait of sufficient detail survives to corroborate what might be termed the classic image, but at least his sketchy representation on coins, on his seal, and in the Bayeux Tapestry does not seriously contradict it." Additionally, he had a "harsh and guttural voice." :) "Large frame" could indeed mean tall stature and/or a overall LARGE man (both horizonally and vertically, perhaps! lol ;) ) As for his irises, if Lloyd's opinion is correct it could be William's were in the gray-blue range, but this would preclude a possiblity of irises in a clear-spotless-blue range; if this is what you mean by "steely blue irises." I have interpreted his "russet" hair to mean auburn, but it might possibly have been outright red. Would you happen to have any sources describing Hrolf? :)

From what I read it seems it was very rare for a Norman to have a hair colour other than in the blonde or reddish spectrum, which would make sense. I am of the opinion that most "Normans" were of Danish origin; and if this is valid, then most of them had either flaxen/golden or ashen/cinder hair with some of them having red or brunette hair. The peat bog discoveries in modern times revealed this ancient Danish hair color spectrum LONG before there ever existed a group of folks entitled in English: the "Normans." ;)

Guess I was a little surprised to the lack of reddish (and even blonde) haired individuals on the forum.I consider those with red or auburn to be "blonde" too; red and auburn are merely 2 varieties of "blonde (i.e., LIGHT!)" hair among the others. This having been said, it should be no surprise to you about the poll being the way it is..."blondes" by hair pigmentation are a minority nearly everywhere nowadays; yes, this forum is no exception to this general situation.

I've attached 2 images from the Bayeux Tapestry of William, one of which displays 2 of his maternal half-brothers: Odo, Bishop of Bayeux & Robert, comte de Mortain. It's hard to see their hair colors, due to their headwear; but it appears that they all had at least flaxen/golden or even red. The one or William alone appears to be flaxen/golden, but this contradicts the other sources Lloyd cites for "russet." So, their are some good arugments that can be made over his hair pigmentation. His iris pigment. seems to have probably fallen in the gray to gray-blue ranges. Needless to say, their skin was in all likelihood blonde; probably, IMO, pale (freckle capable), esp. since William indeed carried the genes for red hair...his son William II "rufous" had to have been a red-haired man, it seems to me (but this seems to be a little controversial too, but not much).;)

Greetings, NormanBlood. Just out of curiosity, whence did you get these descriptions?

Histoire de la Normandie by Jean Mabire and Jean-Robert Ragache. A good read actually and I believe it has been translated in English.

Additionally, he had a "harsh and guttural voice." "Large frame" could indeed mean tall stature and/or a overall LARGE man (both horizonally and vertically, perhaps! lol )

Maybe a larger frame "horizontally" in his later days :P but in his younger days I don't believe so. The quote I have here says "Comme son ancêtre Rolf le Marcheur, il semble toujours écraser les chevaux sous lui" a rough translation would be: Like his ancestre Hrolf "le marcheur", he seemed to always crush his horses underneath him. Thats actually basically why Hrolf was called "le marcheur" in French, he was said to be so big that no horse could carry him and that he always had to walk while the others rode horses. I do have a picture of Hrolf in one of my books, its a statue that is currently still in Rouen, Normandie, but I have no means of getting the picture online. I'll try to see if its on the internet anywhere. As for Hrolf's hair colour, I believe I'd read in one of Jean Renaud's books that he was blonde haired and his eyes a "piercing" blue (no better description unforunately). I am constantly trying to find out more about him. Its a little difficult to discover his true appearance because of the vagueness of many sources. Though William has probably always been better described in texts than Hrolf. Its hard to find out a lot about Hrolf, his past particularly is a bit obscure.

I am of the opinion that most "Normans" were of Danish origin; and if this is valid, then most of them had either flaxen/golden or ashen/cinder hair with some of them having red or brunette hair.

It depends on which area the Norman is from. The Cotentin area of Normandy for example was mostly settled by Norwegians. But the Rouen area was mostly settled by Danes. Hrolf himself was originally from Norway and so were some others he took with him. But the great majority of the Vikings he brought with him to Normandy were Danes. And you're right about the hair colours. In most books I've read the Normans are described as heavily blonde. Though it usually says something to the effect of the usually colour being "blonde or red". This would account for the great number of blonde haired individuals in modern Normandy itself. I at times wonder if the majority of Normans carry the red gene, I know in my own family the gene seems to pop up every once and a while on both sides of the family even if both parents are blonde.

I consider those with red or auburn to be "blonde" too; red and auburn are merely 2 varieties of "blonde (i.e., LIGHT!)" hair among the others. This having been said, it should be no surprise to you about the poll being the way it is..."blondes" by hair pigmentation are a minority nearly everywhere nowadays; yes, this forum is no exception to this general situation.

You're right of course, I guess I had just expected the number to be a little higher considering the number of nordicist individuals and northern European types here.

I have a question.. what if you were born with one hair color, but now, naturally have another? Which one counts?
I was born with jet black hair, it's now brown.
There are several blondes who were born brunette.
A friend of mine, is a brunette, as a child, she was a blonde.
These are natural, subtle changes, but changes nontheless. If you "naturally" went from blonde to black , or black to blonde, you may want to look up "naturally" in a dictionary.

My hair is a quite frankly a plain, medium shade of brown (well, mixed with a bit of premature silver). Not too dark, not too light, although in some picture is seems light, and in some pictures it seems dark.

Obviously, I am biased, but I can honestly say that I prefer brown hair (for myself) over any other color. Brown is the earth, and I am of the earth!

When my hair was very long, the "pony tail" section turned a golden blonde, but that is only due to excessive sun and light exposure, since I have worked outside virtually every day since I was 18 years old (my farmers tan is a site to behold, indeed!) My arms, from the elbow to the wrist, are the darkest parts of my body, yet the hair on my arms is white-blonde! My face and neck have a tan on them, too. The rest of me is as white as mimeograph paper, and my family and friends literally laugh at me when I wear shorts!

Hopefully, pics will not surface anytime soon!

I would say that I fall into the "dark blond" category. It certainly gets much lighter in the summer, as you mentioned that yours does as well. Also, I have that touch of silver myself--especially in the front. "Better gray than nay" as they say! :)

My current avatar pic is my "winter coat". The pic was taken just this past April near some caves called 'Devil's Den'. The last of the snowpack was still underfoot in the dark and shady locales....

I have an odd head of hair. It must be noted that a birthmark I have prevents a large section of the hair on the lower right side of my scalp from growing as it would if I had not had the birthmark. Hair that grows from the birthmark is many colors. The range is quite large, i.e.: Black, Grey, White, Light Brown, Dark Brown, Red Brown, Red, etc. While the rest of my hair is a light reddish brown to a dark blonde or as my mother would say "dirty blonde".

I did that once, in high school. I had long brown hair, and decided that I would truly be more eveil if it were black. So, I dyed it black, and then never dyed it again. The result was two tone hair and the medium brown roots, contrasting with the blck dye, made them look like I was wearing an orange cap on my head for quite some time. Eventually I just kept trimming it until all of the black was replaced by natural hair colour.

I was "tow-headed" as a boy until about 9 . Then my hair darkened to a "dirty blonde" color, though I always preferred to liken it to tarnished bronze. What I have left is mostly still of that color except at the temples where it grades downward into greyish white. I used to have sideburns to the angle of my jaw, but shaved them off when they became grey. Now, I'd have to shave above my ears to get rid of all the grey.

Mine is brown, depends on how long it is. The more my hair grows, the more it gets light.

Totally the same here. I was a redhead though as a kid, and I kind of loved that colour :( . I think I'll have to vote for brown though, I've had that ever since I was 4 or so :(

My natural color is dark red, looking more red some days and more brown others (I have not figured a reason for this yet). The actual hairs are red, brown, and a few blond. I dye my hair blonde (it comes out varying shades of blonde and strawberry), just because it suits my skin and face better -I'm a very pale pink:-) I never would have thought of dyeing my hair blonde (or any other "natural" color)except I bleached it to take blue and found the lighter color suited me better. My mother is blond so it's a genetic possibility;-) Think of it like what color clothing you chose to wear, some colors just feel better.

Weg, yes, this is true. I have had to cut it a few times in my life (aged 12, 24 and 37) to allow it to grow stronger again as where I live the climate bashes it and breaks it. But I miss it when I do and can't wait for it to grow long again. It's like a friend. :)

Yes, I do that time to time (each year) too as I heard you bald if you don't cut your hair at all. Or maybe was it one of my mother's trick to have them cut. :eek It's so long to wait before they grow long, that I cut mine last month. I miss my friend now... If you are BM, and dye your hair black when long, be satanic and whatever, then you are a sad f***. It is in fact, much truer to not adapt to the subcultural norm.

My best friend is the extreme here. Whenever he can get a bandshirt in white rather than black, he will buy it (same with me, BTW ;)). He has decided to get a pink spiked collar because everybody wears a black one. He wears his hair short. Lastly he is NSBM, and while everybody else there runs around with white shoelaces, he has taken black & brown shoelaces as a choice. That is what I call true! :D

I know that one...when my hair is short (which it is on the sides ;)), it oft has that slightly greyish shimmer in certain kinds of light - and that is because the base color is a quite dark brown (that goes somewhat slightly reddish when longer), but there is quite light blonde alongside it, we're maybe talking about 5-10% of it?...well at least I hope so, going grey at age 18 would be a horror! :eek

Ho, red to brown. It's pretty uncommon.

Not sure if I said so before , but the red was more of an "auburn" quality anyway. With time the red became less intense, whilst the brown part turned from light to dark brown, hence the red is only clearly visible in sunlight or when my hair is long. To most it thus commonly looks like dark brown with a light brown shimmer. ;)

I would call my hair brown with auburn highlights. In the summer it goes to light brown with red. When I was a small child it was blond but it darkened around 10. I had a great-great-aunt with red hair that turned bright pink as she aged. unfortunately I have only seen black and white pictures of her.

Dying natural hair is something I will never understand.
It is not my thing but I have seen lovely blue, purple and green hair.

I think that using herbs like henna, hibiscus, cinnamon(red), sage, black tes, indigo, black walnut, elderberries, henna & grape juice(brown-black) mullin, camomile, calendula (blond) is a lovely practice that encourages women to enjoy sensual natural beauty.

well, now I'm curious as to what color spectrum people go by? I don't consider my hair color to be "dark blonde" while some people are calling their hair color, which is substantially darker than mine, "light brown/dark blonde" (not OEN or anything :o).

My hair was blonde was I was a kid. Now its dark brown, nearly black in the winter, but in the summer it gets light brown with prominent blonde highlights. Also near my temples is still very light blonde, almost translucent. This is also where my father first started to go gray.

Light brown (when I was a lad folks used to call it "dish water blonde" which I always found insulting).

Truth be told, the top on my head is now glarish and the fringe around the sides and back is grey.

"Dish water blond"? Is that another way of saying "dirty blond"? ...Hilarious (and insulting, of course)!!! :D

When I was young it was a dark blond. Of course, I was out in the sun a lot. Now my driver's license says "brown", though I generally don't let my hair grow over a quarter of an inch. At it's longest these days it's a dark brown. Back when I was not shaving my head it was a rich light brown color.
